Report on Election-Related Violence during the 13th National Parliament Election (Oct'25 - Mar'26)
In August 2024, through a mass uprising achieved at the cost of the lives of more than a thousand students and citizens, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus was formed and primarily conducted its overall activities by prioritizing justice, reform and elections. Although the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Election and referendum were held in a fair manner, they were not free from violence. After the announcement of the election results, violence spread across various districts of the country, which is highly concerning.
From October 2025 to March 2026, in more than seven hundred election-related violent incidents, at least 2,762 people were injured and 14 were killed. During this period, at least 51 people were shot in election-related violence, and more than six hundred houses, vehicles, business establishments, election offices, and polling centers were vandalized, set on fire, and looted. From the announcement of the election schedule on 11 December 2025 to until 11 February, in at least 254 election-related violent incidents, at least 1,650 people were injured and 5 were killed. In addition, during this period, at least 24 people were shot and more than 200 houses, vehicles, business establishments, election offices, and polling centers were vandalized, set on fire, and looted. On the day of the election, at least 393 criminal incidents and violence were reported across most districts of the country, including disorder at polling centers, ballot stuffing, expulsion of polling agents, and clashes among supporters of different candidates. Although the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Election and referendum were held in a peaceful environment compared to previous elections, violence spread across various districts after the announcement of the results. In six separate incidents of violence, six youths from Munshiganj, Bhola, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Brahmanbaria and one child in Haluaghat of Mymensingh were killed. Furthermore, in the post-election period, in at least 30 districts, more than 270 separate clashes occurred among supporters of BNP, Jamaat, and independent candidates, leaving more than 560 people injured and at least 400 offices, business establishments, and houses vandalized, looted, and set on fire.
